BERGEN, THE GATEWAY TO THE FJORDS

Bergen is the second major city in Norway just after the capital Oslo. This city is really less cosmopolitan and thus more linked to the origins of Nordic culture. That is one of the reason why Bergen is called “Gateway to the fjords”. In fact, it offers an extraordinary mix of mountains, ports, music and culture. Let’s see what this city has to offer and discover some of its own gems. BRYGGEN HARBOUR The small port of Bryggen, located on the bay of Vågen, has been deservedly declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The location, recognizable above all thanks to the colorful wooden houses that make the port truly evocative, hosts also the fish market. Here, you can buy the freshest Norwegian salmon and taste unusual fish “snacks” and much more. For example, don’t miss the chance to try salmon, you will have the feeling that you have never eaten it before! Here you can also eat whale meat, fishing is legal and the permitted limits are never exceeded. It is certainly not cheap – nothing actually is in Norway – but it is an experience not to be missed. BERGENHUS FORTRESS At the entrance to the port of Bergen, as well as in the characteristic Bryggen, we can come across the monumental Bergenhus fortress. This is a real milestone in the history of the town and of the whole of Norway. The Bergenhus Fortress has been destroyed and rebuilt several times, yet it is surrounded from a very well kept park and from which you can enjoy a wonderful view over Bergen. MOUNT FLOYEN The climb to Floyen Mount is a favorite destination for lovers of nature. It indeed offers a breathtaking view of the fjords and a true enchanted landscape. Mount Floyen is about an hour from the

Your Time in Chennai

Capital of Tamil-Nadu, Chennai is one of India’s largest cities. It is the ideal place to discover the unique Tamil culture. Begin you visit by Marina Beach, one of India’s largest of its kind. I found it quite well-cleaned when I visited. You can find many vendors selling all types of things, like cane juice. I saw an improvised toy gun stand handled by an entrepreneurial lady. As there is almost no shadow, it might be a better idea to visit in the morning or at the end of the afternoon. Many historic buildings are located in front of the Marina. Who would not wish to leave on a train journey from a grand old fashioned Railway Station? Puratchi Thalaivar Dr. M.G. Ramachandran Central Railway Station was built in 1873. The architecture is in a Gothic Revival style, with a central clock tower, mostly in red. There are plenty of places to eat cheap food inside. Even if you are not taking a train (though I really advise you to go around India with the Railway’s sleeper-class instead of an uncomfortable bus or expensive flight), it is really worth it to go inside to look at the mass of travelers and activities going on. The Egmore Museum or Government Museum is dedicated to history and human history. I enjoyed looking at the selection of Roman antiques, not the first thing you expect on a trip in India. You also have more local exhibitions, like deities statues from the Chola dynasty. It might be a good idea to keep this inside visit for the extremely hot afternoon. The Madras high-court was built in 1862. It is a good symbol of Indo-Saracenic architecture, a style mixing Mughal elements with a gothic inspiration. Walking around Madras university was an interesting experience, the university where I studied

Head to the Rocky Mountain National Park

Here are the things you should definitely not miss in your visit to Rocky Mountain National Park. Go Up to Discover the Alpine Tundra Ecosystem Before you drive there, take some warm clothes. It is much colder than in the other areas of the park. You are at an elevation between 11 000 and 15 000 feet. Strong wind is almost permanent. Few plants can grow and survive over there. This is the only place in North-America where you can observe an Alpine Tundra Ecosystem. 2. Hike to the Mount Ida Walking to the top of Mount Ida will offer you an impressive panoramic view of the park. During the last part, the trail is a bit rugged. However, you are not too closely exposed to cliffs. This is doable with children, given they are responsible. 3. Chapin-Chiquita-Ypsilon This hike is only for those in great physical shape. It take a tremendous effort. The trail is not very well maintained. 4. Chasm Lake This hike will take 8.5 miles back to the departure. The landscape on the upper part looks absolutely desertic and hostile to life. Some parts are quite rugged. You will have frontal view of the Longs Peak wall. 5) Sky Bond You will be enjoying some views surrounded from three sides by steep cliffs. The parking may be full during summer, in this case you can take the free shuttle to go there. At the top, an alpine lake is waiting for you. 6) Lake Helene Once you arrive on the lake, you can observe the Notchtop Mountain on the northern side. To your right, you are looking at the Knobtop mountain. 7) Halett Pike Be careful of lightning risk during this trail. The roundtrip distance is 10.3 miles. You will be able to admire views from

TRAVEL TIPS FOR FIRST-TIMERS IN INDIA

India is indeed one of the most fascinating and rewarding destinations to travel in, but it can also be the most challenging and frustrating. First-timers visitors in India can indeed find it even more tough. The land of marvels For many this is the epitome of transformative travel. It’s one of the remaining places on earth from which you can still get a real dose of culture shock. You can discover something new about yourself and about the world, even find yourself or just marvel in the diversity of the landscapes, the vibrancy of the festivals, the fervour of the religion, the colours, the food, the people, the rich history and the fascinating culture. So, if this is your first time travelling in India, keep in mind the following tips! 1. CULTURE SHOCK It might be obvious, but as first-timers in India you have to land there with an open mind and expect the unexpected. For your first time in India, the culture shock can be a challenging assault on all the senses. Be prepared by learning as much as you can about the Indian culture before you arrive there. Then, once there, be open-minded and prepared to adapt the way that you travel to suit India. Leave your western ideals and way of thinking at the airport because they would not apply in Indian culture. 2. AVOID BURNOUT By far, the most common complaint reported by first-time visitors to India is fatigue – simply trying to do too much in too little time. India is vast, colourful and addictive, but have realistic expectations about how much you can see. Take your time and focus just on a state or region. An extensive trip to one particular area can deliver far more than a whistlestop tour of the whole country. Afterall, India

Your Time in Savannah

Home to the movie Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, Savannah is arguably the prettiest small city of northeast America. Many of the heritage was threatened by real estate speculation in the 1960s and 1970s, but these times are far away. Begin your journey on the riverfront. Very animated in the evening time, it is quiet in the morning. You feel the old-harbor atmosphere of the city, and can take the Stone Stairs of Death from Bay Street to River Street. Dating from one century, it has a reputation to induce bad vertigo. Be sure to not miss the Savannah City Hall. Built in 1904, it has a large golden dome.  All around the city you can find buildings and students from the Savannah College of Art and Design. This is unique in United-States, a country where universities are generally concentrated on a campus. The SCAD certainly brings a trendy atmosphere to the city, and many students participate to its development. Though the food is of average quality, it can be worth it to have lunch at the Pirate’s House. Built in 1753, it is the oldest building in Georgia. Stevenson would have been inspired to write The Treasure Island by this place. Savannah has too many historic squares to name them all, so let me mention the Telfair Square and Johnson Square. The Telfair museum has both ancient and contemporary buildings. There are a few historic villas that can be visited inside, but my preferred one is the Owens-Thomas House, where Lafayette stayed. To be fair, some of the parts have been a bit cheaply renovated, but the overall atmosphere stays extraordinary. Forsyth Park has impressive landscaping and a memorial to the Spanish American War.  There are many riverboat cruises with meals for an expensive price, but honestly

Top 10 Best Things To Do In London

Are you planning a trip to London and you don’t know where to start? You’re in good hands. Classic and modern, conservative and rebellious, London is contradictory and unique. But above all things: gigantic. That is why if you have no idea how to start planning your trip in London and you are looking for inspiration, we leave you here our 10 favorite plans to do in the English capital: 1. Westminster Abbey, Palace of Westminster and Big Ben A reincarnation of British history, the majestic Westminster Abbey is one of the most imposing churches in Europe. The site of coronations, festivities and royal weddings, the Abbey houses the mortal remains of more than 30 monarchs, as well as some of the most famous writers and people. The building is over 700 years old, during which time it has undergone several repairs and even bombings during World War II. Today it is fully restored and is one of the top London attractions that we think is worth visiting. The Palace of Westminster houses the seat of Parliament, and the clock tower is called the Elizabeth Tower (in honor of Queen Elizabeth II) and has inside the huge bell known as Big Ben. While it originally served as a royal residence, no monarch has lived there since the 16th century. Instead, it is currently the site of the House of Lords and House of Commons that make up the UK Parliament. Can you visit Big Ben? There is nothing more representative of London than Big Ben, so it is understandable that many people want to see it from the inside. Unfortunately, the visit to the interior of this famous tower is only limited to residents of the United Kingdom, who must reserve the entrance at least 6 months in advance. 2.

Brasília, planned to be amazing

Brasília is the political capital of Brazil. A city built in 1955-1960 in the middle of nowhere, in the heart of the fifth largest country in the world with a mission: to be a modern and stunning capital that would show the world a modern and advanced Brazil. This is a completely planned city, even though several satellite cities that revolve around the capital’s life were born in its surroundings, this is a unique city, totally planned by the greatest architect in the history of Brazil, Oscar Niemeyer. To know it is, above all, to be enchanted by a fluid architecture and very different from what we find in other destinations. The airplane Can you see the Airplane? Planned to look like an airplane, Brasília has a very peculiar shape. That is why its residential areas are called “wings”. There is the North Wing and the South Wing, the parts of the city where buildings are planned and built for the well-being of the political and legal class and workers in the region. The Eixo de Brasília is the region that most interests us, as this is where we find the monuments, museums and palaces that make this city worth visiting. This axis runs in a west-east direction and created the fame of Brasília as a city without corners. The Square of the Three Powers The Sun comes in the Congresso Nacional Palace This is the center of Brasilia, it is very accessible by bus or taxi and is where all the important decisions in the country are made. On one side you find the National Congress, a magnificent modern building with one of the most famous symbols of the city, with two towers flanked by two semi-spheres, one facing upwards and the other facing downwards.
