Brasília is the political capital of Brazil. A city built in 1955-1960 in the middle of nowhere, in the heart of the fifth largest country in the world with a mission: to be a modern and stunning capital that would show the world a modern and advanced Brazil.
This is a completely planned city, even though several satellite cities that revolve around the capital’s life were born in its surroundings, this is a unique city, totally planned by the greatest architect in the history of Brazil, Oscar Niemeyer. To know it is, above all, to be enchanted by a fluid architecture and very different from what we find in other destinations.
The airplane
Planned to look like an airplane, Brasília has a very peculiar shape. That is why its residential areas are called “wings”. There is the North Wing and the South Wing, the parts of the city where buildings are planned and built for the well-being of the political and legal class and workers in the region.
The Eixo de Brasília is the region that most interests us, as this is where we find the monuments, museums and palaces that make this city worth visiting. This axis runs in a west-east direction and created the fame of Brasília as a city without corners.
The Square of the Three Powers
This is the center of Brasilia, it is very accessible by bus or taxi and is where all the important decisions in the country are made. On one side you find the National Congress, a magnificent modern building with one of the most famous symbols of the city, with two towers flanked by two semi-spheres, one facing upwards and the other facing downwards.
Next to this magnificent building are the Planalto Palace and the Supreme Federal Court, two equally beautiful and modern buildings, also designed by Niemeyer. In the three buildings it is possible to make a free visit, but in the Supreme Court it is not possible to wear sports clothes, so remember to wear the appropriate clothing.
Esplanade of Ministries
This region is where the country’s ministerial buildings are located, many of them following a modern architecture proposed by their architect. The highlights here are for the Itamaraty building, where the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Justice are located, which mixes the modern with the Gothic.
The Itamaraty Palace is worth a visit, as its guided tours are free and available not only in Portuguese but also in English and French, reservations can be made directly through the official website. Remembering that this is the building made to show Brazil to the world, therefore, it is a masterpiece full of works of art by Brazilian artists from different regions.
The JK Bridge
An unmissable place with an incredible view is the JK bridge. Built to cross the Paranoá River, the bridge has three arches that seem to flow between the banks of the river and form a beautiful landscape, especially at sunset.
Going there at the end of the day is a great option, since when night comes and the city lights come on, the view from there turns into one of the most beautiful postcards in Brasilia. This is a point that has to be on any tour around the city.
Other tours to discover Brasília
This is a great city to take a tour already planned, it is not the best option for those who like to walk aimlessly, because, as it is a planned city, the attractions are very far from each other, although very accessible and at certain times the heat of the year is very strong and walking around large open areas doesn’t seem like a good idea.
So enjoy and also go to the TV Tower, the best viewpoint in the city, from there you can see how the city that was planned out of line with the rest of the region that grew without any organization. It is a very big contrast and makes us rethink what we call urbanization a little.
In addition to the most common tours, Brasília still has a beautiful National Library (BNB), a botanical garden, lakes, eco parks and monuments in honor of the main names in the history of Brazil. It is a very enriching tour, especially for those looking for culture and admire unique works of architecture.
